Egypt prepares for the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), a new cultural gem near the pyramids of Giza. The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), the largest museum dedicated to a single civilization, will open its doors on November 1, 2025 – opening to the public on November 4. The unique building will feature thousands of never-before-exhibited artifacts, including the entire collection from Tutankhamun’s tomb.
1. The largest museum dedicated to a single civilization
The Grand Egyptian Museum is the largest museum in the world focused exclusively on one civilization – ancient Egypt. It covers an area of approximately 500,000 m², which is twice as large as the Louvre and 2.5 times larger than the British Museum.
2. The Complete Collection of the Treasures of Tutankhamun
For the first time, all the treasures from Tutankhamun’s tomb – some 5,000 artefacts – will be on display. Of these, 2,000 will be brand new to the public, never before exhibited.
3. Cultural centre – not just a museum
GEM will serve as a multifunctional cultural centre. It includes the largest archaeological library in Egyptology, a state-of-the-art research and conservation centre, an education centre, conference facilities, a theatre, two auditoriums, workshops and public programmes.
4. King Khufu’s wooden “sun boat”
Within the museum’s embrace is Khufu’s Sun Ship, the first ship 42 m long and weighing 20 t, transported in one piece from a distance of tens of kilometres in 2021. Her twin, restored and renovated, will be displayed next to her.
5. An architectural marvel combining past and present
The museum was designed by Heneghan Peng Architects, who won an international competition in 2002. The building features a 33,000m² inset roof oriented to the pyramids and a 46m high, 600m long stone façade consisting of 42 triangles and 7 pyramid shapes. The Grand Hall is crowned by a colossal statue of Ramses II – the sun’s rays illuminate it on 22 October and 22 February, just as they do in his temple at Abu Simbel. Designed with sustainability in mind (natural cooling and air circulation), the entire complex includes state-of-the-art conservation facilities, a cultural centre and an underground tunnel for transporting artefacts.
The great news is that the charter line from Poprad-Tatry Airport to Hurghada will already be in full operation, as the first flight will take place as early as 17 October 2025. And so you can enjoy this historic moment in just a few hours on a flight from the Tatras.
