We handled 65 per cent more passengers from the Tatra Mountains year-on-year

The year 2024 was the most successful year for the airport under the Tatras in terms of the number of passengers handled since 1976, when during the former Czechoslovakia the airport flew from Poprad to the whole world and managed to handle more than 153 thousand passengers. This is a 50-year record and a 65% increase compared to 2023.

Operating performance and 2024 in figures:

  • Total volume of cargo handled: 0,225 (t)
  • Number of air movements: 10 335

The year-on-year growth in the number of passengers is mainly due to the new regular route to London (Stansted) of Ryanair, which started flying on 1 November 2023 as part of an incoming project to attract more tourists to the Tatras. This line was also supported by the Prešov Self-Governing Region in cooperation with KOCR North-East of Slovakia and two regional tourism organisations OOCR High Tatras Region and OOCR Liptov. Operational performance was also helped by a good strategy and preparation for the 2024 summer season, which resulted in twice as many charter flights year-on-year.

Fast amenities, ample parking, family atmosphere and breathtaking views. These are the benefits most appreciated by travellers from the regional airport Poprad-Tatry.

Cargo at the airport in Poprad is currently used as an AD-HOC solution for express transport during crises, for example during a line failure in an automotive plant and an acute need for spare components, or during a failure of express truck transport. However, we are looking for air cargo partners to help move this segment out of our airport as well.

The number of air movements decreased by 11% year-on-year, mainly due to the shortening of the airport’s operating hours.

Long-term vision

The long-term vision of the airport under the Tatra Mountains is to play a key role in the development of tourism and tourist arrivals. The airport is located close to five national parks and tourists can reach the first top ski resort as well as alpine hiking in just a 15-minute drive from the airport.
